Asia, Laos, Vang Vieng, Nam Tham
INDEX   UNITS   TRANSFER WAYPOINTS TO GPS

Great sport climbs on limestone from 5.7 to 5.13 on 3 small walls and a giant limestone cirque. The area is located 5.5 Km north and little west of the city of Vang Vieng.

The bolting is of high quality. A guide is required. Wildside Ecotours is the only company allowed to guide climbers in Laos.

Drive a couple miles North of Van Vieng to N 18o 59' 3.8'' - E 102o 26' 47.5'' CWO040 and take a dirt road. Drive to the parking at N 18o 58' 51.9'' - E 102o 26' 25.7'' CWO041 . Walk to the river and ford it with your pack on your head. Then follow the trail up toward the valley to a cave entrance N 18o 58' 37.5'' - E 102o 25' 38.6'' CWO042 (bring headlamp). The cave has a couple disorienting turns in it and exits via scary ladders to the climbing area. Watch out for Tree snakes on the hike out.

Great sport climbs on limestone from 5.5 to 5.12 on 3 walls. The area is located 2.7 Km north and little west of the city of Vang Vieng.

Vang Vieng is a great town in a beautiful area and Laos is cheap. The bolting is very good, but extra bolt hangers are useful (some get stolen). A guide is required. Wildside Ecotours is the only company allowed to guide climbers in Laos. Watch out for Cobras. The Sleeping Wall coordinates are N 18o 56' 46.9'' - E 102o 26' 8.9'' CWO045 . There is also a cave about 100 yards upstream with some excellent overhanging climbs in the 5.10 - 5.12 range but the belay stations are only accessible during the dry season. Currently there are about 20 to 30 routes.

Sleeping Wall information provided in February 2004 by Alexander, more information can be found in his travel journal.

Asia, Thailand, Krabi, Phra-Nang Peninsula
INDEX   UNITS   TRANSFER WAYPOINTS TO GPS

Sport climbs on overhanging limestone above picture perfect tropical beaches. Caves and stalactites are everywhere. The area is full of bungalows, restaurants that are minutes away from the crags, seclusion is hard to find.

From the city of Bangkok take (for example) a plane to the city of Krabi. Take a bus to the city of Ao-Nang or Krabi and take a long boat to Rei-Lay beach. In Ao-Nang long boats leave simply from anywhere on the beach N 8o 1' 50.3'' - E 98o 49' 19.4'' CWO004 . The GPS coordinates of the areas are not sufficient as its very difficult to head directly to an area. Read the guide book descriptions on how to get to each area... or ask other climbers.

Many Krabi area coordinates are provided by Alexander, more information can be found in his travel journal.

Asia, Central Vietnam, Dalat
INDEX   UNITS   TRANSFER WAYPOINTS TO GPS

Top roping on limestone on 3 small walls down a canyon. Grades 5.8 to 5.10. Worth stoping if you are passing through and itching to climb.

The crag is 4.8 Km from the town of Dalat on the main road heading south.

Phat Tire Adventures in Dalat can arrange food, equipment and transport, but if you have gear do it on your own. There is a parking lot at the trail head with a cafe to view a waterfall on the road that heads south from Dalat. Park there and walk down to the waterfall, cross the creek and continue down the trail to the various crags. The first climbing area is a rock above you to your right when you reach a small flat area after walking 10 minutes; the GPS coordinate of that area is N 11o 53' 57.0'' - E 108o 26' 58.2'' CWO030 . The other two areas are downstream. The second climbing area requires rapelling down to the right from the flat area, its right next to the waterfall. The third climbing area is 10 minutes further down stream on the left. Climb over the water with the belayer to the right.

Dalat information provided in February 2004 by Alexander, more information can be found in his travel journal.

Asia, North East Vietnam, Halong Bay
INDEX   UNITS   TRANSFER WAYPOINTS TO GPS

Vertical limestone islands covering a 1300 square kilometers area. This sport climbing area has the potential to be world class as more routes are developed.

From Hanoi take one of the many tour buses to the Halong Ferry terminal (a 3 hours ride). From there many boats go out to the islands, including Catba, one of the largest island with a town and hotels. Day trips from there by boat are easily arranged. Permits may be required from the government.

Actual GPS coordinates of climbing areas on Catba island and elsewhere were not measured. Please email these much needed coordinates!

Halong Bay information provided in February 2004 by Alexander, more information can be found in his travel journal.
